Derek Schall photo1 Calling all Friends of the Circle of Care Foundation:

Please take a few minutes to read the letter we received from a dear friend of the foundation, Jennifer Schall.

"To all my friends –

I am not sure if you have heard the devastating news….

On Friday night 7/19/13 my son, Derek, was at a church BBQ in Kentucky where he lives alone.  It was a clear beautiful night and he was riding his motorcycle home, on a dark country road that he was not familiar with, he hit a patch of gravel on the road.  He was thrown from his bike into a 6 feet deep rock lined drainage ditch.  He never lost consciousness and had the wherewithal to try to crawl but unfortunately he realized quickly that he could not feel his legs.

He then searched for his cell phone and when he found it he had to turn it off and back on to get signal so that he could call his friend Stephanie for help.  Derek stayed on the phone with Stephanie while she drove down the road looking for him.  She and derek photoAbigail finally found him and went down in the ditch to sit with him and pray for him while they waited for the ambulance crew to arrive.

He was taken to Owensboro Hospital and I got the call in Philadelphia at 2am from the ER Doctor that my son was seriously injured, his back was broken at T5-T6 and his spinal cord was completely severed.  Upon arriving in Kentucky Saturday morning, I was told by the Neurosurgeon that he had never seen such a bad fracture.

Derek needed surgery ASAP but we could not stay there with a Doctor who has never dealt with such a devastating injury….We had to get him to Philadelphia to give him the best possible chance at recovery.

As devastating as this news is, I thank God every day for letting me have my son.  This outcome could have been so much worse and I am truly blessed to still have Derek here with us.

The simple act of reaching out to friends saved his life. It’s always about friends, isn’t it?  So I am reaching out to you. Derek needs help paying for so much of this care, and the needs of his new lifestyle."

Thank you sincerely,

Jenifer Schal
